What are the decorations made of

Made from a well known brand of air dried modelling clay.

This clay is air dried not kiln dried, so not suitable for outdoors.

Because they are clay and handmade the surface may have imperfections.

Single sided, though can be painted on reverse if desired.

They may contain traces of talc - if you have an allergy to talc, please do not purchase.

Why does my decoration look slightly different to the photos on the website

As each decoration is hand made (by myself) they are unique and may look slightly different to the photos on the website.

I try my best to be consistent, but sometimes the stamped pattern maybe in a different position and the number of spots, toes etc may vary.

The size of each decoration should be as listed, as I use a cookie cutter to cut them out, so each one is the same.

How do you make them

Each one is individually handmade by myself, in my Derbyshire studio.

  • Roll out the clay, then stamp them out using a cookie cutter
  • If a pattern is required stamp it in
  • Dry for around a week
  • Once dry, drill a hole if required
  • Then a good sanding and wipe down

What can I paint my decoration with

I recommend using acrylic paint - this is what I use, and gives a rich strong colour.

You can also use:

  • Poster paint
  • Ready mixed paint
  • Water colour paint (will give a washed out appearance)
  • Paint pens and 'Sharpies', but be careful not to scratch the clay with the nibs
  • I've also tested nail varnish and this works fine too!

I sell ready mixed paint on this website, more suitable for children.

***TOP TIP***

Do not oversaturate the clay with paint or scrub the clay with the paint brush nib (very small children sometimes do this), as this can damage the surface of the clay and cause the paint not to adhere to the decoration and look patchy.

Decorating your decoration

Decorate them with anything you like:

  • Ribbon
  • Material/felt
  • Buttons
  • Glitter
  • Sequins
  • Mini pom poms

All stuck on with lot of glue!

Caring for your decoration

Some people choose to leave them untouched and some paint and decorate them, either way they are an indoor decoration and can not withstand damp/wet conditions.

If they do get damp the unpainted/unsealed clay area may turn a shade of yellow, pink or purple, as they re-dry out over time this pigmentation/colour will fade, it does not effect painting them.

If they get fully wet they will loose their integrity and become soft (though from my tests this does take a LONG time).

Do not place in direct sunlight or near a heat source, as this may damage it.

Keep away from naked flames, as some parts maybe flammable - i.e. the hanging cord which I supply with each decoration.

Safety

They may contain traces of talc - if you have an allergy to talc, please do not purchase.

Keep out of the reach of babies, very young children and pets (or supervise), as your decoration may have sharp edges or parts which could break off with force/damage and become a choking hazard.

Do no eat, if this happens please seek medical advise.

Keep away from naked flames, as some parts maybe flammable - i.e. the hanging cord which I supply with each decoration.

Hanging cord could also be a coking hazard around young children and pets.

Craft activity not a toy.

Why has my decoration turned pink, purple or yellow

This happens when they clay gets damp, or is exposed to moisture.

Once the decoration has dried out again, it should return to its original off white colour.

The colour is only on the surface and can be wiped off if you wish, but this may damage the surface of the clay decoration if you rub too hard, so be gentle.

You can still paint it, if it has turned a different colour, this will not effect painting it.

Are they single or double sided

They are designed to be single sides (as they do have a front and a back), but you can paint both sides, I often see this!

How long will they last

They are designed to last a lifetime, as long as you keep them safe and dry.

Are they waterproof

No, the only way to make them somewhat waterproof will be to varnish or seal your final creation once you have painted it, though even doing this, I can not guarantee they will withstand outside weather conditions.

Designed as an indoor decoration.

If they get fully wet, they will loose their integrity and become soft, (though from my tests this does take a LONG time).

Why has my decoration got imperfections on it

Due to the nature of the air dried clay, you do get marks/indentations on the surface.

They are also a fully handmade product, not made my a machine, so every one is different and may have imperfections.
