What are the decorations made of
Made from Hobbycraft air dried modelling clay.
This clay is air dried not kiln dried, so not suitable for outdoors.
Because they are clay and handmade the surface may have imperfections.
Single sided, though can be painted on reverse if desired.
Why does my decoration look slightly different to the photos on the website
As each decoration is hand made (by myself) they are unique and may look slightly different to the photos on the website.
I try my best to be consistent, but sometimes the stamped pattern maybe in a different position and the number of spots, toes etc may vary.
The size of each decoration should be as listed, as I use a cookie cutter to cut them out, so each one is the same.
How do you make them
Each one is individually handmade by myself, in my Derbyshire studio.
- Roll out the clay, then stamp them out using a cookie cutter
- If a pattern is required stamp it in
- Dry for around one to two weeks
- Once dry, give them a good sanding and wipe down
What can I paint my decoration with
I recommend using acrylic paint or pens - this is what I use, and gives a rich strong colour.
You can also use:
- Poster paint
- Ready mixed paint
- Water colour paint (will give a washed out appearance)
- Paint pens and 'Sharpies', but be careful not to scratch the clay with the nibs
- I've also tested nail varnish and this works fine too!
I sell ready mixed paint on this website, more suitable for children (4 years plus).
***TOP TIP***
Do not oversaturate the clay with paint or scrub the clay with the paint brush nib (very small children sometimes do this), as this can damage the surface of the clay and cause the paint not to adhere to the decoration and look patchy.
Decorating your decoration
Decorate them with anything you like:
- Ribbon
- Material/felt
- Buttons
- Glitter
- Sequins
- Mini pom poms
All stuck on with lot of glue!
What if I need a larger amount
Please contact me to discuss your requirements and amounts, so I can make you more!
Clay decorations normally take around ten day to two weeks to make.
Caring for your decoration
Some people choose to leave them untouched and some paint and decorate them, either way they are an indoor decoration and can not withstand damp/wet conditions.
If they do get damp the unpainted/unsealed clay area may turn a shade of yellow, pink or purple, as they re-dry out over time this pigmentation/colour will fade, it does not effect painting them.
If they get fully wet they will lose their integrity and become soft (though from my tests this does take a LONG time).
Do not place in direct sunlight or near a heat source, as this may damage it.
